I have yet to see PPD used as henna or henna with PPD in Morocco.
This is not a very scientific statement as I have not surveyed every
store in every corner of Morocco, rather a general impression. Even
the henna hustlers in the central square of the the old city of
Marrakesh don't use PPD though I feel pretty certain that they do add
nasty toxic ingredients. I have never seen a tourist with a black
henna design. In my 6 years of living and travel in Morocco I have
seen very dark henna but never BLACK henna. Even dark henna is pretty
rare. This is not to say that it doesn't exist in the form of PPD.
Also, the situation may be different in other North African countries
and also further down into Africa. I have heard reports of black
henna in Egypt and also see an example that looked like PPD to me. I
think in most of North Africa the people are light-skinned enough to
be happy with henna in its natural color or pushed with gasoline.
