I have found that the problem goes away with practice. It's like any
exercise...painful the first time because the muscles aren't used to
it. Also, if you only use j-bottles once every 2 or 3 weeks your
muscles lose the memory and their tone. I think the best thing to do
is use them a little bit often, gradually building up to several
hours. Your hand should be okay.

Also, there is a way to massage the muscles while you are working so
they don't cramp up on you. Essentially when you work with the
bottles your muscles contract and shorten and when they are like that
too long without a break they cramp. You need to massage them to
lenghten the muscles. Using your other hand, grasp around your thumb
way down at the base, where the bone meets the main part of the hand
and squeeze and pull on it like you are milking it, or like you are
trying to get the toothpaste out of the tube. You can use some kind
of massage oil to make it a little easier, and especially good is an
oil that contains arnica which is good for sore muslces. You can do
this during a break in your hennaing, or do it after the fact. I
learned this little trick from a client who is a physical therapist.

That's my advice as a seasoned j-bottle user.
