: I can't think of any reason that an astringent would be a problem
in
: pregnancy... except in a folk wisdom sort of way, that parallels
the
: "moist, fecund" nature of pregnant ladies with "moist fecund"
things
: .... i.e. pregnant ladies should eat melons, because they resemble
: them.
:
: IN any case, henna is very safe for dying hair.
:
: The Goddess Lakshmi considers it offensive for pregnant women to
: henna, as she feels that pregnant women are *polluted* .. but if
you
: are not a devotee or Lakshmi, or otherwise don't feel you're
polluted,
: you can be confident that henna is not going to be a problem.

In the Indian culture, henna is considerd very cooling. Any foods
and environment which are cooling should be avoided during
pregnancy. There are other cultures who believe the same. for
instance, the chinese - though I have not come across any books
mentioning this - I think it is to do with the Ying and Yang.
Anything cold during pregrancy will lead to the baby suffering from
respiratory problems. When I was expecting, my mother and her
generation catagorically refrained me from cold drinks and food in
the summer of 1983 when the summer in England was hot (for once!)and
certainly from putting henna on my hands and hair (I missed a lot of
Henna parties due to this!) Hope this helps
