In the old mediterranean cultures, swans sybolized noble purity.
It was associated with Apollo, carried him across the sky and gave him
the gift of prophesy.
The swan supposedly forsees death (this: "swan song")
In German lore, virgins could be transformed to prophetic swan
maidens.
In the medieval period, it was the symbol of the hypocrite.
They sometimes symbolize feminine grace, and Aphrodite and Artemis
were accompanied by swans.
