Essential Oils- Quality First!Posted by txilar on July 2, 2001 at 23:23:39: In reply to: monoterpine hydrocarbons posted by Catherine Cartwright Jones on July 2, 2001 at 00:51:59: Oh you're too much!! Too worthy also, since I'd LOVE to try all theseoils, but alas... Anyway, I've found some more *stuff* which may be of use. First, a sentence describing the constituents of essential oils caught my eye: "Oxides-These are found in a wide range of essences, especially those of a camphoraceous nature, such as rosemary, eucalyptus, tea tree and cajuput. Oxides tend to have an expectorant effect; for example, eucalyptol (eucalyptus)." (from http://www.essential-oil.org/shop/esential7.htm, a pretty cool looking site, but they are in Canada and have a $50 minimum order) Also, for anyone interested, here is an excellent article detailing both the makeup of essential oils and how important quality is: http://www.positivehealth.com/permit/Articles/Aromatherapy/zinov38.htm I got to thinking, these oxides look pretty promising- both Globulos and Radiata Eucalypti have high percentages, as does Ravensara, Rosemary, Rosewood, and Tea Tree. "OXIDES: According to “The American Heritage® Dictionary of the English Language”, an oxide is “a binary compound of an element or a radical with oxygen.” Cineol (or eucalyptol) is, by far, the most important member of this family and virtually exists in a class of its own. It is anesthetic antiseptic, and works as an expectorant. Cineol is well known as the principal constituent of eucalyptus oil. It may also be found in rosemary, cinnamon, melissa, basil, and ravensara. Other oxides include: linalol oxide, ascaridol, bisabolol oxide, and bisabolone oxide.¹ " from http://www.essenworks.com/Chemistry.html As you said about Citrus Oils their phototoxicity could cause problems, but perhaps the cineol oxide is a key to something... : If you cruise down this page, you'll find some excellent links posted : by the brilliant Niko Txilar (who's helped me on so much chemistry! : (I am not worthy, I am not worthy)) to info on terpines.
