Most of our business is home visits, and normally you can pretty much
check out what a person wants on the phone before deciding to go to a
home. Between dogs, cats, hair & teenagers, I normally would not
have someone come to my house. I would find it more invasive to have
people come to my home than to go to someone else's.

Some of what we have done is very intimate, both on men and women.
Intuition and caution are important. For safety, I also have a system
of keeping the address of where I am on the phone pad and also when I
arrive, ask to use the phone to "check in with my husband" which
works whether you are married or not! I would never agree to change
sites at the last minute (ie arrive somewhere and be told we're going
somewhere else), but that situation has never come up. Usually my
clients are a lot more nervous than I am! You can screen clients
pretty effectively and I have turned people down that I just didnt
feel "right" about. You know - "sorry, we don't have that time slot
available".

If you do choose to do in home visits, a sense of humor goes a long
way towards creating a comfortable vibe. Stories? I once
henna'd "Property of Cynthia" on a guy's butt surrounded by roses.
He called me later to tell me it turned out really dark. He had lain
out in the sun for hours with the henna on. Even though he was naked,
it was a fun henna job. Professional demeanor goes a long way towards
creating a vibe.

I think the main thing is, the more you do it, the more comfortable
you feel -- you must feel like you are controlling the environment
regardless of whose turf you are on. Screening people is the best
way to be safe. If you don't feel safe, then you have the right to
leave. Keep pepper spray in your purse if it makes you feel better.
But if you don't feel comfortable going to people's homes than don't
do it. Perhaps you can also work as a team with another artist - you
don't need to charge the clients more, just do the henna job in 1/2
the time.

Happy & Safe henna'ing,
Kree
