Indian Wedding- final resultsPosted by Lauren on July 6, 2001 at 18:12:48: I took an hour off work to go to the wedding, and I go tthere atexactly ten, which is when they said the wedding was. I was SO nervous! The moreso because I had done a design on my hand the night after I did hers that turned out worse than anything I've done in years. It was just awful. I sorta fixed it last night by dint of completely covering the part I did before and that seems to have done some goood- at least, it's interesting instead of awful. Anyway, I got there and the bride was still getting dressed and there was no sign of the groom. Her hands and feet were not smudged at all, which was a BIG relief. Her feet were reasonably dark, her palms were still orange, and you couldn't tell anything was on the backs of her hands from five feet away. Strange. I suspect she showered just after she removed the paste, which was only on for a few hours. She seemed pleased. I sat around while several people came and went in GORGEOUS saris and fussed with her. I got several compliemnts on my hand (Oh what a lovely design (white woman) who did that for you?) and you could tell they were uncertain about my having done the design on the bride. I was very honored when they asked me to put the eyebrow bindis on- I guess they trust my artistic eye! I was supposed to be back at work by 11, and the groom didn't even arrive until 11:15. I stuck around as long as I could, then tried to leave but was detained by the grandmother who wouldn't let me leave without food. I have a bag of various stuff next to me at my desk right now. as I was leaving, about ten cars and a charter bus pulled up and unloaded a great herd of people in traditional dress. i drove out through them. Of course I had to leave just as all the people I went there to meet left! But at least the bride and her mom were happy. I guess that's what matters most. She looked like Radha from one of the Mughal-era paintings. I'm not sure I've ever seen a woman look as delicate and strong and fierce and vulnerable. She walked out like a queen. Wow. And I was part of it.
