It's the sugar. Sugar makes the paste all gloopy and helps it to
hold together for long lines. Grenadine has HEAP of food coloring in
it, though, and that alone will stain the skin, albeit not as long as
with the henna. I'd use plain sugar as some folks are sensitive to
that sort of dye, also it's WAY cheaper (says the lady who mixes it
in drinks frequently!)
