Various areas of skin on your body have different temperatures and pH
levels... and, of course, the thickness of the skin you're staining
will affect how much of the color will "take." (Generally, most of us
don't have very thick skin on our backs. Our palms are a different
story.) So, then, the best way to get a good, dark color on your back
is the same way you try to get a good, dark color anywhere:

1) use the freshest powder you can find;
2) get a good strong mordant;
3) keep the design damp and very warm;
4) keep it on as long as you can (overnight or 6-8 hours); and
5) don't get it wet for 24 hours.

If there's more magic to it that I don't know, I hope someone else
will let us know. Hope I've been able to help!

Sophie
