Well I wrote to my friend who lives in the Nederlands and here is his
reply :

I checked many possibilities, but henna is nowhere sold in Amsterdam
coffeeshops or smartshops. It is only used as dye for hair and for
tattoos. And, of course, henna is used by women from Morocco, in
their hair and especially on their hands in religious rituals. But no
smoking of henna in Amsterdam. There is also no reason to smoke it,
because there are no hallucinogenic ingredients. The only medical use
is on the skin or internally to solve skin-problems. To be more
specific: [Alissa's note : I'm not sure what text he is quoting from
here but sounds like a PDR type source]

As a medicinal plant, henna has been used for astringent,
antihemorrhagic, intestinal antineoplastic, cardio-inhibitory,
hypotensive, and sedative effects (7.6-192, 11.1-154). It has also
been used as a folk remedy against amoebiasis, headache,
jaundice, and leprosy (11.1-154). Henna extracts show antibacterial,
antifungal, and ultraviolet light screening activity (1.8-169,
7.2-21,14.1-21, 14.1-35). Henna has exhibited antifertility activity
in animals and may induce menstruation (7.5-76,
11.1-154). The dried leaf and petiole of henna are generally
recognized as safe when used as a color additive for hair (21 CFR
section 73.2190 [1982]).

The hallucinogenic substance in marihuana is THC, which is formed as
a kind of crystals on the leaves. That substance is not found in
henna, and to me it is 100% sure that henna has no hallucinogenic
effects. But, according to your story it is a nice working placebo
*grins*.

No, what to my opinion really happened is a misunderstanding, a
misinterpretation of the Dutch word for the marihuana-plant, the
hemp. In Dutch it is called 'hennep' which is pronounced
as 'hannuhp'. So, the boy is right! Hennep, better known as marihuana
of weed, is sold in every coffeeshop in Amsterdam!

So the moral of the story is : don't light up that henna splif just
yet... it ain't gonna work.
