Re: Opening the attatchment and old software (o/t)Posted by Jeremy on July 26, 2001 at 08:30:27: In reply to: Opening the attatchment and old software posted by Liisa on July 26, 2001 at 06:43:17: : Can you tell me wether it's a macro virus like "I love you": and "Melissa"? I was told that I wouldn't have to worry about my : system getting jammed because I use such old software which doesn't : include macros at all. Before realising it was a virus I tried to : open the attatchment, but nothing happened. No, it isn't a macro virus. It is executed the moment you try to open the attachment. It is not executed if you simply save the attachment to your hard disk. But if you try to open the saved attachment file by double clicking on it, the virus will launch. Best bet to check whether you're infected is to look in C:\windows\system for the file called SCam32.exe In addition, there is no harm in downloading and executing the REG file described in http://www.datafellows.com/v-descs/sircam.shtml This action will disable any active virus code. It will not, however, prevent reinfection if you happen to run the virus again. This is why you then need to use an up-to-date virus scanner to remove the infected files. And no, I'm afraid I can't give instructions here on how to do this. Go to the DataFellows web site Download page at the link below. I'm suggesting DataFellows simply because we've already used their tool successfully to clean up systems at work. Jeremy
