That sounds like it would work - what I personally do is dab the lemon/sugar onto the design with a cotton ball, and then unroll some cotton balls into strips and cover the design with the strips. Then I use paper tape (or masking tape if I'm out) to hold the cotton strips in place. I would also recommend ordering fresh henna from an online source listed on this site. Local stores often have henna that sits in boxes. I prefer henna that is already sifted - just makes the process easier. But who knows, maybe the woman you mentioned knows of a really fresh local source. Half the fun is experimentation... Good luck!
