My vacation exp. at wildwood crest, NJPosted by Diana on July 31, 2001 at 13:32:25: In reply to: tell us more, Shel! posted by Darlahood on July 31, 2001 at 07:31:44: Ok, so I dabble in henna, and I am no pro. But something tells methat the vendors on the boardwalk are not all honest. It seemed like every other booth was doing 'henna' tattoos, and my friend Sarah wanted to get one, but I was very nervous. At one booth, it smelled like eucalyptus oil, but was black and they said it only takes 25 minutes to set and then it can come off. Do PPD and euc. Oil go together? seemed to me they were trying to fool people. Not there. At another booth, Sarah said to the guy that I do henna, and wanted to know what he puts in his mix.. so we got to talking. basically, he offers both, the black, for people who want black, and he could not deny that it was PPD. He tried to tell me that the black 'henna' was safe for black people.. and he agreed with me when I went into a rant on PPD danger...but he wouldn't tell me whatwas in the black, or what he put in his henna either, but said that it had to be left on for hours.. better, but darn it, Sarah's black and from Germany, and I wouldn't risk her having a reaction to anything! Lord only knows what was in it, as he wouldn't even let me get a wiff of it unless we had a tattoo done. Finally we cound a booth where all they did was henna, it was not just a corner of the shop.. and they were very honest.. they had signs up all over about how to care for henna, how dangerous PPD was, how their black had no ppd... So i started asking questions, and finally felt like I had found the right place.. They got their mud in pre-mixed, and couldn't tell me what was in it, but she did let me smell it (with a roll of the eyes from her too) and it smelled ok.. So Sarah was all set to have hers done, till they told her (as I had tried to) that it would take 2 hours for them to draw and seal the design, and then she had to be careful not to 'smush' the area for at least 5-6 hours... and she couldn't go in the ocean for at least 12-15... better yet, don't go in at all... so she didn't get it done. So, out of probably 20 shops, I felt that only 1 was worth trying.. Such a shame that henna is going to get such a bad rap due to dis-honest people down there. : I'm in Tampa and Rachael is in Orlando and I know we'd love to get in : on THAT henna action!
