Okay, I'm going to date myself here. Back when I first started
paying attention to music and getting interested in going to
concerts, I fell in love with the Ramones (one of the greatest punk
bands ever; thier lead singer died right around the same time that
Douglas Adams did). I got to see them 3 times, the first time being
when I was sixteen. Back then, the mosh pit didn't have a name - it
was just the huge mass of people slam dancing (that's what we called
it) in front of the stage. It's a wild place, and not one for a girl
who needs her glasses to see . . .

The mosh pit is still around, and you'll see it when a lot of
alternative bands play. The one at the Nine Inch Nails concert I
went to far too long ago (NIN opened for David Bowie, which was kinda
strange, but I liked it a lot) was frightening. We sat far away fron
the stage, but could see the mass of moving bodies in the area in
front of the stage - it reminded me a lot of things from Lord of the
Rings and Tailchaser's Song - really kinda creepy and energetic and
alluring. Occassionally, the evening "news magazines" will do a
piece on how dangerous the mosh pit is (and it's companions, stage
diving and body surfing) - a lot of people have been hurt in the pit.
