Even without the sleep-deprivation, lack of caffeine, delicate
pattern, and too oily paste, even the best of us will do this
occasionally. Two nights before my first (okay, only) Indian
wedding, I drew a design that came out so smudged in the morning that
I knew they'd take one look at it and send me packing, so I covered
up the horrible fingers with wide strips going from knuckle to tip on
each, with white-space chevrons near each knuckle. The morning of
the wedding, the fingers looked great. Funny thing was, the old
design showed through as a dark red, but it wasn't as sharp as before
(against henna color looked much better that against pale skin, I
guess). It was actually kinda nice with the two-tone effect. The
underneath design disappeared as the stripes got darker. After a
couple weeks, when the back of the hand was gone but the fingers were
still medium-dark, I did a new design using the previous dark and
light spaces and got a 3-tone effect which was very cool.
The only downside is that it looked weird for a couple week,s because
the knuckles went almost black while the rest faded. Overall, a
success, and as soon as I get the @%$#@$#^% new site up, I'll tell
people where to look at the pics.
