I have used henna powder that was khaki rather than green that gave a
really good stain. I've also had powder that was green and looked
very fresh that did not stain. You can't always tell by color or even
smell. Mix up a small batch and try a test patch. If after a few
minutes you have a stain then its good. If you get a almost not there
stain or no stain its stale.
