"Colorless" henna?

At my local hippie grocery, they carry a line of boxed henna
haircolors, in six or seven shades ranging from colorless to mahogany.
All the boxes say "100% Henna."

I guess what I'm trying to figure out is...

1)How can you offer consistent and distinct colors from the same "100%
henna"?

2) How does colorless henna work?
Is it just a fortifier? I've been wanting to henna my hair to give it
strength, but it's dyed and I've heard enough horror stories about
dyed hair changing colors/turning into straw/melting off from
henna treatments that I decided to wait until I sought wiser counsel.

Any admonitions, suggestions, warnings or the like would be greatly
appreciated.

Thanks!
Sophie
