We're Good GorillasPosted by Catherine Cartwright Jones on August 8, 2001 at 13:03:12: In reply to: Oh, My Maude! This is sooooo addictive (very tongue-in-cheek post) posted by CorasMama on August 8, 2001 at 05:39:28: Henna feels wonderful because we primates absolutely love to betouched and groomed, and we get very little of it these days! Our furless skin gets little ripples of pleasure when someone gently touches us. For millenia, primate groups have spent hours each day grooming each other. It creates social bonds, reduces the stress chemicals in our blood ... we are healther and live longer when we groom each other. Sadly, it is no longer fashionable to cosy up to a good friend and pick fleas off of them ... but we have these nice opposible thumbs now to hold henna cones! Henna feels wonderful because grooming behaviour feels wonderful. It's a shame that most intrapersonal touching that we've got in our lives is either dominance touching (hitting, shoving ... agressive stuff) or sexual touching. There's a vast array of touching in between that builds relationships, calms, reassures .... henna is in that range. We need this touch!
