Well, a few things came to mind for me from what might impact
managements point of view regarding henna in the office. 1) Henna
has a very distinct odor that lingers even after your lunch hour is
over. Even if you use oils to mask the odor, the eos just create a
different odor that might not be what they want in their workplace.
Usually offices want to have no identifyable odors..just a clean
fresh scent. 2) Henna paste on body parts have to be handled with
care for a while after they have been applied. Management might just
thinks this will interfere with employees working at full capacity as
they try not to smudge their henna design. 3) Management might just
be a bit concerned how visitors to the office might view their
employees with the henna paste on them.

Even though you are talking about applying the henna during your
lunch hour, there are ways that this could bleed into and impact the
work area outside of your lunch hour. Also, just because it is your
lunch hour you can not just do anything you want to...especially when
it is on their site and on their employees whose hennaed body parts
will be in their office for many days to come. I know you love henna
and your generous nature makes you want to just apply it to everyone
each chance you get. But there is a time and place for everything
and you may not have chosen the best time and place for this.

You may be correct in your thought that the supervisor has a personal
thing going on here. But you might consider that she brought to you
what has been discussed by others at the law firm but because she is
your supervisor, it is her job to bring it to you. Don't think
smiles from others is always acceptance. I think she may have pulled
your coat to what is on the underground...she just brought it to the
surface. If you really want to get yourself in a jam...just try
going over her head to find out. If you can't establish this as a
religious thing for you and all your hennaed compatriate, then you
have to follow the rules and policies as articulated to you.

If I were you and valued my job, I would go to her and thank her for
being straight with you. I would ask if others were uhnappy with the
hennaing going on and complaining about the activity but not saying
anything to you. And, I would wonder out loud why it would take so
long to be brought to your attention that you were doing something
that was unwelcomed there. I would assure her that you never
intended to do anything in the workplace that created a problem for
others or yourself. I know you are not going to do this but it would
go a long way to resolve whatever bad feelings have been left over
from that conversation with your supervisor.

They can't know what is in your purse unless you take it out, it
smells to high heavens or they do purse searches or x-rays daily. So
the purse thing is a nonissue unless you flaunt it. I think what was
meant by not bringing it to work is that it is not desired that you
go off premise at lunch and henna employees who come back to work
with wet paste on them either. What else could the issue be?

Maureen feeling assured that you are saying right how..."Forget that!"
