: Okay guys - I need a little input here. I an absolutely FUMING
about
: this. I have been doing henna during my lunch hour at my office -
no
: charge, just for the practice and "advertising" aspect, if you
will.
: Once again, this is NOT on firm time, it's on my lunch hour. Well,
: today, I'm called to my supervisor's office and told that I can't
do
: henna on my lunch hour any more..... (HUH? Isn't this MY lunch
: hour?). I am very angry. I explained that it isn't on firm time,
: I'm not charging anyone, so it isn't a business being run here,
that
: it's something I do for my friends - no deal. I was THEN told -
: you'll LOVE this - that I can't bring my henna paste to work in my
: purse or backpack either (I responded by saying that it isn't a
: controlled substance and I'll do as I please on that issue). I
asked
: if the mehndi was the issue or just that I'm doing this on my lunch
: hour - it isn't the mehndi. I'm NOT real happy about this. The
: designs and concepts is well liked by the attorneys and staff
alike,
: it's pretty much a "personal" issue with this woman - she
: can't "control" me, so she harrasses me instead.... I don't mean
to
: whine. Ideas? Comments? Suggestions?

oops forgot to write...
As I am a manager(in retail but a manager none the less) I can
answer some of your questions. No it isn't control or personal issue.
It is called certain things should not be done in the workplace. Hey,
I'm a belly dancer& henna artist jane of all trades (off work)
doesn't mean i can practice with music on my break. A least your
supervisor brought it to your attention most won't. Most "mundanes"
don't understand about mehndi or henna, and I know you love henna we
all do, but #1 people are sensitive to certain scents, and #2 your
supervisor may find that henna in the corporate workplace is not
acceptable, companies have an "image" to maintain. I would not get
mad or angry over this, be lucky you weren't fired for it. I know
people who got fired for much less in fractions in the workplace. As
a manager that how we think. If your co- workers like henna so much,
have a henna party, good food, good conversation lots of hennaing,
and it will be stress free and out of the workplace. While you are at
your workplace, you are using their desk, their phones etc(companies
do think this way)lunch hour or not, you are doing it on their
property. Also there could be insurance issues etc. I am not trying
to be mean but I don't sugar coat or "politcally correct" stuff. I am
just giving a managers point of view. On a personal note I keep my
hobbies, such as belly dance, tarot cards, henna etc. Out of the
workplace, I henna myself at home and show it off at work, (like in
retail, I have no time to do henna at work) Good luck to you, Bright
Blessings, Christine- who just got back from her vacation in Salem,
MASS. :)
