Well, I actually got myself a copy of Macromedia Flash 5 - sadly
enough, it's not a free program (the viewer is free, but the program
to make flash images isn't). If you want to try out the program,
Flash has a 30-day free trial preview. (go to macromedia.com/flash)
I think it's fully functional, so that's an added bonus.

Once you've got your hands on a copy of Flash, whatever your means of
getting the program, you can search for "flash 5 tutorials" on google
or whatever search engine you want, and tons of related sites come
up. The Flash program itself has about 10 tutorials, but they aren't
so good at explaining how to create specific effects (like fading or
morphing text, for example).

My goal is to acquire a lot more in-depth flash knowledge than the
superficial knowledge I have gained so far. The program is pretty
complex and requires diligence. I've only made 2 simple flash
programs (this and an intro for my college choir website:
http://hcs.harvard.edu/~hrcm), and each one took me a *really* long
time. I've spent a few hours each day for the past week, putting
together that very brief flash segment I showed you.

However, I think that once you get a handle on the flash language and
concepts, a lot will come intuitively. The results of the program
are really amazing, and it's rewarding to be able to have so much
control over the appearance and functionality of a website. I'm going
to buy a Flash book (any suggestions, Noli?) when I get the chance -
I'm considering getting the "Flash 5 Bible."
