It has begun (long)Posted by samantha on August 20, 2001 at 14:47:03: Things are going forward with gusto. I am being interviewed by ourregional tv station Granada, with regards to the black death. Also i wrote to my MEP who has sent me a copy of a letter he has wirtten I thought you might be interested in reading it. below is my email to him ***************************************************** I am a professional henna artist based on the Wirral. I do not know if you are aware or not but henna has had some serious bad press recently. The media have latched onto a substance called "black henna" which is natural henna adulterated with a toxic trans dermal chemical called PPD Para -Phenylenediamine. This toxic chemical mixed with natural henna is on every street in popular holiday resorts. The affects of this chemical being used on the skin can be devastating ranging from blood poisoning, bladder, kidney and liver problems, anaphalactic shock, skin blisters, burns, lesions and scaring; the list is endless. Something needs to be done about this situation abroad (and in the UK). Unscrupulous vendors are putting this stuff on children as young as 2 with devastating effects. Please find photographs attached of children with PPD burns. If you feel that this can be taken further please contact me ********************************************************** his email to me and his letter to the EC Dear Samantha, Many thanks for your e mail alerting me to the, as you say "nasty substance", black henna. I have written to the European Commission to ask the Health Commissioner if he is aware of this substance and what steps can be taken to protect the public. For your information I attach myletter. Perhaps you will let me have your address so I can forward you a copy of Commissioner Byrne's reply when I receive it. Yours sincerely, Brian Simpson MEP ************************************************************ Commissioner David Byrne European Commission Rue de la Loi 200 B-1049 Brussels 20th August 2001 Dear Commissioner, I have been contacted by a constituent over henna tattooing. My constituent tells me that there is a substance available on every street in popular holiday resorts called “black henna” which is natural henna adulterated with a toxic transdermal chemical called para-phenylenediamine (PPD). I am told the effects of this chemical being used on the skin can be devastating, with symptoms ranging from anaphalactic shock, blood poisoning, bladder, kidney and liver problems, skin blisters, burns, lesions and scarring. I understand that this substance has been used on children as young as two years old by unscrupulous vendors. Given the current vogue for tattoos and the popularity of non- permanent henna tattoos and given that I am told that the adulterated henna is being used in popular holiday resorts throughout the EU, can I ask whether the Commission is aware of this health risk and what steps can be taken to safeguard the public. I look forward to hearing from you. Yours sincerely, ************************************************************** Let the ball roll SAM
