Lawsone is another word for hennotannic acid. It is the dyestuff in
henna. Some tests were done to see if pure lawsone was safe to use as
a colorant in cosmetics, but some Chinese hampsters told the
scientists that it was quite toxic.

Lawsone, or hennotannic acid, is in small quantities in henna leaves,
small enough to be of no harm. Similarly, huge quantities of vitamin
A is very toxic, but you can eat carrots as much as you please without
suffering.

Since hennotannic acid is only staining the exfoliating layer of
dermal skin, there's no way for it to build up in your system and harm
you.
