May I suggest perhaps throwing a big secluded design in the center of
your small, detailed patterns would make it less of a blob and more
of a background. The link below has some of my henna designs, the one
on top of them all on the page shows the idea I mentioned with the
big section of vine breaking up the pattern. Also the look on my foot
piccy on the bottom is kind of the same thing. Also I'd suggest
perhaps using different detailed patterns so that there's a distinct
difference, it often keeps it from looking blobish if the pattern
changes. More negative space can help also (more skin showing between
groups of patterns).
