In reply to: Ravensara! Is anyone using it in their recipe? posted by Maureen on September 3, 2001 at 01:00:20:

Hi Maureen,

I've been using ravensara EO in my paste eversince CCJ revealed the
Sirius Mixes. Initially I used cajeput EO but it was not giving me a
good dark stain (I found out later that it wasn't the EO's fault, the
Jamila henna I was using was kinda old so the stain wasn't very
dark). Disappointed with the results of cajeput, I bought a bottle of
ravensara (Neal's Yard Remedies) and a new bottle of tea tree (T3). I
mixed the ravensara with my old henna and again it gave me a "normal"
dark stain (nothing like CCJ's results at all). That was when I
realised it was my henna, not the EO's problem.

About 3 weeks ago, I received some fresh Moroccan henna from Kenzi. I
mixed up a batch with my ravensara (15 drops), T3 (15 drops) and pine
EOs (10 drops) to about 2 tablespoons of henna powder. I am SO
pleased with the results!!! I get dark dark brown stains at the back
of my hand, where it is hard to stain (pic above). My recipe is very
simple, henna powder mixed with warmed fresh lime juice and some
sugar. I let the paste sit for about 12 hours before I added the EOs.
I waited for another 10 - 12 hours before I started application. I
normally leave the paste on skin for about 4 - 5 hours or until it's
totally dry, the sugar keeps the paste moist for a long time.

I like the smell of ravensara. My paste has an alluring, slightly
minty and sexy scent (YUMS!). Now I experiment with all the EOs,
mixing my own combination for the scent and also the staining power.
I have been using just cajeput, ravensara, T3 and pine EOs so far. I
found that I'd instinctively reach for the ravensara first whenever I
mix up a batch (maybe 'cos I was using it when I first get that
almost-black stain). Psychology perhaps? Maybe? .... but the smell is
YUMS so that might be it too :) ...

I have more pictures of the results of ravensara spiked pastes in the
link below (2nd to 9th pictures from the top).

Hope this helps :) ....

Love & peace,

~Jewel~
