: I took a little tour of Times Square last night with my henna
partner
: just to see if there was any black henna going on. There are a ton
: of portrait and caricature artists there, plus sellers of t-shirts,
: incense, postcards, etc. Sure enough we found four purveyors of
: black paste o' death on one block!!!
:
: One was a Chinese couple that only did Chinese characters and all
the
: rest were male artists, a very common trend. I rarely see women
: doing black henna.
:
: We talked to one guy and he noticed the henna on our hands and
: said, "oh the brown stuff, that's from India". We asked him about
: his henna and he did claim it was henna and told us, "henna
naturally
: comes in three colors red, brown and black" and "what I use is the
: black henna, like they use in Arab countries". He said that his
: partner brought it from her country and pointed to a woman who
looked
: Arab.
:
: We were livid and speechless, unable to focus our comments. I
think
: I need to enlist the help of Anne whose verbal skills when
confronted
: with black henna artists far surpass mine.
:
: I was astounded at the amount of bad information this guy was
passing
: around and how fully he believed it. Also, all of the black henna
: stands looked like crap. They were all poorly set up, with badly-
: lettered signs full of misspellings, and their books were full of
: crappy designs. It just all looked so trashy...I'm surprised that
: anyone would trust them. And the smell of hairdye was
overwhelming.
: I can't believe that people think that henna really smells like
: that. I am hoping that our decked out henna table, with beautiful
: sign and books full of gorgeous designs (thanks to CCJ, Alex, Liisa
: and many others) will show people that natural henna is the classy
: way to go.

At one of the street fairs forget which one, I went to a henna booth,
they were muslim and they had black & natural henna and all they had
for a cheap warning on an index card. (for the black death). I think
that is also not a good thing. So I passed it up. Oh, yeah the street
fairs (the larger ones) I see at least 1 real henna both the rest
black henna. Good luck with your booth. take pictures... Let me know
your schedule so I know which ones you are at.... Christine
