I wonder about those individual differences. Lauren and I are using
the same EOs and our henna is from Morocco, tho from different
suppliers. She has not been getting chocolately results while I am.

My feeling is that a lot has to do with timing, and yet, I adhere to
a different time table from CCJ's Sirius suggestions. I mix, wait 24
hours, add the EOs (only cajeput) and then use the paste within 2-8
hours of adding the EOs. I can use the paste for three days after
that and usually add 10-15 drops of the EO to give it a kick start.

My timetable seems to work for me giving me cherry chocolate stains.
I have had poor results when I stray from it. I have tried making
the paste in the morning and using it 6 hours later and I get a very
light stain. Also, 5 day old paste is too old to get a decent stain.

I usually leave the paste on for 4 hours (cajeput gives license to my
so-called negative character trait of impatience) and don't do
anything special in the way of aftercare. I usually lemon-sugar it
and then wash the paste off (with NYC's over-chlorinated water).

I don't think that there is a whole lot of finesse in the method..I
don't feel like i am making a huge effort to be precise about the
mix. I don't measure any of my ingrdients and I don't time anything
except a vague concept of 24 hours and I don't do anything special
with the temperature keeping the paste overnight in an oven with the
pilot light on or anything. The only time precision comes into play
is when I am actually hennaing.
