I'm not sure what might have happened, unless it was slower in its
dye release than expected (esp. if its been cold where it was cured).
Have you tried the batch again? It might be staining beautifully by
now.

My only contingency plan is I usually have a batch made up a few days
before an appt. (if the appt. is on a Friday, I will make up a batch
on Tues.) Then let it cure, wait until Weds. night, paint myself up
with it and by the time I am at the appt. I have the peace of mind of
knowing how the batch is reacting by using myself as a guinea pig,
and I find it helpful to point to different parts of my body and
say "see? this is the color stain you can expect on your hand, bicep"
etc. And, if for some reason the batch doesn't work (knock wood,
never happened yet) then I have time to make up another batch. But
I'm a bit of a perfectionist, so all this prep might seem anal.

Being away from home does make things tricky -- my all out bail-out
is I always carry a tube of unopened commercial pre-mixed paste --
my "in case of emergency, break seal" henna.

But I have had very good luck with a fresh batch still retaining
great staining power for up to 2.5 weeks when kept in the fridge, so
I've found a batch that's only a few days old (terped or unterped) is
often at it's peak.
