: I was just contacted by a spa/salon in NYC to offer henna to their
: clients. They offered me a 50/50 split. I use a salon near my house
: and have a 70/30 deal with them (I get 70% they get 30%) so 50/50 was
: a shock. I have heard that 50/50 is the standard split for tattoo
: artists working at a tattoo place, but that makes sense because the
: artist is probably using the equipment, utilities and supplies of the
: tattoo place, is covered by their insurance, benefits from their
: advertising etc.
Hi Kenzi, tattoo shops give between 70-50% to the artist. The artist
supplies their own guns and tools and usually insurance (at least this
is what I have noticed to be true) The shop basically supplies room to
work in and the sign on the door.
I wouldn't work with a salon that wanted 50%. I'd say a 60/40 split in
your favor is more like it. They are providing an extra service to
their clientele with no extra effort on their part. I would set your
own rates as usual, of course count up for the extra fee, make your own
brochures (that sounds reasonable) decide on several days a month you
would be available to them and ask the receptionist to only book
appointments during that time. There is NO reason to drive or prepare
henna for one person getting an anklet. Waste of your time, energy and
supplies. The salon is offering an ammenity at no extra cost to them. If
a massage room or pedicure table is empty and you use it one saturday
afternoon a month they only profit. After all there only trouble is
having the receptionist answer the phone for you and even then you may
prefer to schedule yourself. 50% is greedy. Don't work for that little.
I would lay all your concerns out, your expense v. theirs, travel time,
etc. and let them know that 50% is not reasonable particularly since I
imaging this won't be a constant thing, a few appointments a month I;d
imagain.
Good luck
Jessica

This salon wants me to make my own brochure, make
: copies of my portfolio and write up a price list. I will be using my
: own supplies (of course!) and will only be using one of their rooms
to
: do henna...their cost to have me there is minimal.
:
: I was told that I could make $30 my minimum price but that would mean
: I would make $15. So I would have to travel 1/2 hr. there, 1/2 back,
: plus the 1-1/5 hours of actually doing henna and aftercare. So I
: would be getting paid $15 for 2-2.5 hours of my time. Seems like a
: bad deal to me...am I missing something? It's not like I am a
: supermodel saying I won't get out of bed for less than $10,000!
:
: What I want to know from all of you, if you have an arrangement with
a
: salon, what is your deal with them? What is the split? What is the
: role of the salon in terms of services provided to you?
:
: Thanks for
