Regular dyes actually change the color of your hair. Henna coats the
hair with a layer of transluent color. This is why it looks so
natural- you still have all the natural variations of color. Think
of taking a printed color picture and coloring over it with a crayon-
you have the original colors still but with the crayon color overlay.
This is why it is so shiny and strong- the translucent layer captures
the light and holds the shaft together.
I used Rainbow Henna for several years with excellent results. They
are a little twiggy, by which I mean that they are not finely ground
and you'll have bits of plant in your hair for a week or so. You can
use hand-quality henna to avoid the twiggyness. The good thing about
Rainbow is that they have a color card showing what each color of
henna will do on different colors of hair. Your retailer should have
one.
