Hi,

You were talking about pine:

: So I'm wondering what would happen if you broke off some of those sap
: nuggets -- you know, those golden amber nuggets that collect in
: places along the bark? --

I think that golden stuff you are talking about is called resin (I know it's called 'hars' in Dutch, but I don't suppose you have a Dutch/English dictionary handy, do you?).
Anyway, I got some of that stuff (golden amber nugget but still sticky) on my hands years ago, and it was almost impossible to get it off. It also irritated my skin where it stuck. And it stuck for days!

: and melted them into your lemon juice when
: mixing henna?? Could smell incredibly good, assist with sticking
: power (like sugar does) and possibly even darken the henna?

I'll get to the bad-for-your-skin part in a moment (stick around, it's a good one!), but I also doubt it would stay melted. I imagine it would either thicken your henna paste, or, more likely, form beads in it. It might make applicating harder, rather than easier.

: Anyone tried this, or anything like it? Or anyone have any ideas or
: caveats to add to the experiment before I decide to try it?

Big, big caveat: it sticks. Better than superglue. And it upsets the Ph of the skin quite a bit. It dries the skin out quite efficiently (the ancient Egyptians took advantage of the fact and used it to embalm mummies, in fact). Leave it on for long, and the skin will crack. Last but not least, it's highly flammable.

Other solutions:
I've been able to achieve quite amazing sticking powder with just sugar:
This morning my husband had a lot of trouble getting the henna paste *off* his foot. I made the terped paste with a little sugar added (dried cane juice, actually). I added it as I first mixed up the henna with the lemon juice. Then when I applied it (to my husbands foot), when it was almost dry but before it had a chance to crack, I dabbed it with a sugar-lemon solution, stuck cotton wool to that while it was still sticky, and covered with micropore tape.
This morning my husband first tried scraping it of, buthe couldn't get it off, so he took a shower, and after that it still took him fifteen minutest to scrape the last bits off.

Second thing:
Heat.
I hennaed the inside of my hand with (terped) paste earlier this week, and rested my hand on a heating pad for a couple of hours (taking it off occasionally to cool down!). It's a dark chestnut (maybe a little more red than that) and in the center of my palm approaching black coffee. Gorgeous! :) Previously I didn't get beyond milk chocolate on a good day!

Just my two Dutch cents, soon to be converted to Euro's.

Cheers,

Sarah Jasmijn
