The tattoos (according to sources I've found) are done with carbon (burnt one thing or another, or soot caught on a bit of pottery), and sometimes also crocodile or Nile perch bile, or breast milk. Perhaps they're carbonizing the henna, and using that as the carbon for tattoo.
