In West Africa, the scarification is done by cutting the epidermis
down into the dermis with a razor, or by raising a bit of skin with a
thorn and then cutting off the bit with a razor. There are some muds
that are favored for keloid formation (mud from mangrove swamp is used
in Australia to form keloids the size of carrots). I don't know what
other things might be added to form keloids, though many black people
form such without anything added.

Most cultures have some form of visible display of willingness to
endure pain, to identify them as an adult and part of a group. We
endure endless years of classroom education. Bloodless ....
