The snake swallowing it's own tail symbol is called 'Ouroboros'. It's a very old symbol, and is found in cultures all over the world. There is a webpage devoted to it here:

If you like the movie, check out the book. It is *so* much better still than the movie (and I like movies, this isn't some dumb movie-prejudice thing!). I read it a couple of times as a child, and it was a breathless read right to the end. It was printed in two colours ink, which really enhanced the story. Beautiful! Blueish green and reddish brown actually, almost like henna! :)
Just checked, it's available on Amazon, & every edition got a five star customer review. Guess I remembered right about it being a breathtaking book. :)
