Hi Graeme, to confuse you even more some suppliers add powdered greendye to the henna powder to make it appear fresh.
There is no substitute for trial and error, an entire batch of henna
can go 'fut' with no significant change in the colour of the powder.
Find yourself a good honest supplier, test each batch you receive and
don't keep it hanging about too long. Store your henna carefully in
the fridge or freezer in a light tight container or bag and always
test your paste before applying henna to somebody for cash.
Visual test for henna freshness is not conclusive.
