just my two cents...

In reply to: I need advice for party TONIGHT (Friday) posted by Lauren on October 26, 2001 at 18:03:35:

I did a bunch of 9, 10, and 11-year old girls and their moms this
spring. Two hours was the time I had, but I had I think 8 moms and 8
kids.
That's great that they paid you in advance!
Business cards and kits for sale are a great idea. When I've done mom-
daughter parties (I've done 3 or so) I have given a short lecture about
henna beforehand, loosely based on the classes Kree teaches. The one
this spring the kids were all the (rather priveledged) daughters of
your typical Seattle "good white liberals" and they were very bright
and very openminded, and the moms were using henna as another way to
educate their girls. A lovely idea, but I was sad thinking about kids
who just sit in front of the TV, who don't publish their own poetry or
plant trees in their neighborhood...
As for wrapping, I generally don't do it on customers. If I think the
person can grasp what I'm telling them, and can understand that the
paste shouldn't move around on the skin, then I will, IN DETAIL,
describe how to wrap using cotton balls, unrolled, and toilet paper,
and then a loose warm sock. Plastic, in my opinion, is a bad idea.
When I have used it on myself I've sweated so much that the design
blurs. If people are familiar with henna, I think you can get into the
more complicated aspects of aftercare, but for the average newcomer
(and me, too!) keeping the paste on the skin and not getting the area
wet for a day is enough of a trial! I usually just lemonsugar and
blowdry really well.
Hope this helps, and good luck with the party, it sounds fun!

: I kept meaning to post to ask for advice about this but never got
: around to it. Any timely advice is appreciated, but after the fact
: will help next time.
: I am doing a 12th birthday party tonight for 7 girls and 2 adults. I
: have two hours, which should be enough time to do decent-sized
: designs on each of them.
: I've been paid half in advance (yay) and my travel time is being paid
: for at half my design rate (yay) so I'm all set for money. I know
: I'm undercharging, but that'll just be until I start getting busy.
: So... I've nevr done a party before. It will just be me, since time
: is not an issue. I made up a batch of henna using my Moroccan
: powder, my super-duper eucalyptus oil, and a bit of cardamom. I
: wasn't going to add the cardamom but I find I really miss the smell.
: I couldn't find my metal tips last night, so I just used the carrot
: bag, and for some reason, it really worked, far better than the bag
: alone ever has before. Because I was leaving it overnight, I LS and
: wrapped it in toilet paper then plastic. I took the plastic off
: shortly, because I thought that the terped hennas do better when
: exposed to air. Is this right? It gave me a decent stain which is
: still darkening.
: So, now I have this semi-terped henna. For the party, do I LS and
: wrap, and if so, do I include platic? Any other tips relating to
: parties or 12-year-olds, or 12-year-olds' moms for that matter? Are
: there any special touches that you use that makes for a more
: memorable occasion? Should I bring kits to offer for sale? Should I
: hand out business cards? Any advice appreciated!
: Lauren
