a couple of those thingsPosted by Maureen on October 27, 2001 at 17:26:55: In reply to: several things... posted by Graeme on October 26, 2001 at 09:52:35: Hi Graeme,With coarse powder, rather than sift, have you tried straining. I mix my paste (a bit more than usual) and put it into a muslim or cheese cloth bag (the ones with the drawstring top)...while having the cloth bag inside a plastic baggy. I hold the top of the cloth bag and the plastic bag in one hand and squeeze the paste through the cloth bag into the plaste bag. This strains the paste very well for me and I don't have to bother with the sifting thing. Once the paste is squeezed from the cloth bag into the plastic bag, I remove the cloth bag...turn it inside out and rinse it out to have it ready to use again. Then just proceed to how you usually transfer the paste to your applicator bottle or cone. OK, my sifting method required me to go out and buy some stuff. I purchased a sugar or spice dispenser cup that has a handle on it, a lid with holes in it and a plastic lid that covers the lid with the holes. The cup is about the size of a mug. I also bought a tea ball and some cheese cloth (actually, I had the cheese cloth). Anyway, I put my henna powder into the dispenser cup with some coins or stones ( I like the coins better)...The spread a square of cheese cloth over he top of the dispenser with about two inches of cloth hanging over all around...put the top with holes over the cheese cloth and secure it on (usually they twist on like any top). I put the dispenser cup upside down into a plastic bag about four times larger than the dispenser cup...tape and hold the top of the plastic bag closed. Then this is hard to describe. I hold onto the handle and bottom of the dispenser cup through the plastic of the plastic bag and shake like crazy until the powder has been sifted from the cup to the plastic bag. I find I lose very little powder this way and that I get a very thorough sifting. The nylon hose thing did not work for me. They kept bursting when I was straining and were sometimes not tightly woven enough for sifting. Actually children's stockings worked better that adult stockings...at least for me. But I abandoned the stocking thing all together. That sugar/spice dispenser cup can be found in stores that sell household cooking products. Concerning the water hardness or softness thing...yep, it does effect the stain. Someone else will explain the how and why. Maureen I am so sorry that you ruined your favorite nylons...LOL!!! I bet the females in your house have theirs in a lock box by now.
