Go to books of love poetry from Persia, Afghanistan, Turkey, Spain
through the medieval period.
In almost any book of 100 medieval love poems from the Islamic world,
you can find 10 poems that specifically mention that the beloved wore
henna.

If you can find 100 paintings of women from the medieval Islamic
world, get out your magnifying glass ... about 1/4 of those women
will be hennaed ... and every so often you'll also find a hennaed man.
Look for books that have pictures from the Maquamat. Look for books
that have paintings from Shiraz in about 1530.

Through the archives on the forum, when I've posted sections from
historic books ... poems, descriptions .... that mentioned henna, I've
nearly always listed the bibliography. I did a lot of those posts in
'99.

You'll ALWAYS get far more out of research if you do it yourself.
You'll get the joy of discovery, and you'll notice things that other
people haven't. Never quote a secondary source when you can get your
hands on a primary, examine it, and come to your own conclusions. I'm
secondary. Go straight to the paintings, the poetry and all.

There's a painting of "the morning after" "the night of the henna" by
Khwajy Kirmani, Bagdhad, 1396 .... some of the attendants have hennaed
fingertips. The bride's hands are covered but you can see her face has
been harquused. All the other elements in the painting (and there's
MANY) verify that the night of the henna and consumation proceeded
pretty much as now.

I'm not exaggerating when I say there's far too many sources to list.
