I've read a couple books of Andalusian love poetry in the hopes of
finding references, but no luck. I suspect they're Sufic, and love
isn't the Oh-Boy-My-Bride love but Oh-Boy-Allah, in which case I
won't have any luck. What sort of text am I looking for? No luck
with the Persian books, either, so far, but I've got another couple
books to go through before I'll say I'm done with the local
libraries. At least I found one picture with an actual pattern.
Yippee! Now I need to prove it's not a fluke by finding more.
By the way, I was looking in my copy of that book by Dorine something-
German that everyone says is just copied from Navneet and one of the
front pieces is an Indian woman with a pattern of dots on her hand,
not a dip, dated c. 1815. I know that "c." means they're not sure,
but it may be earlier than 1822.

: They were using one of several Moroccan/Egyptian commonly used
North
: African ultra-dark techniques, and they had fresh henna growing
: nearby.

: The squiggles are calligraphy.

: There isn't a better drawing that I know of, but there are
: cross-references in literature that mention women using calligraphy
in
: their henna patterns and embroidery.
