With any decent henna, you should get some noticeable stain after
fifteen minutes, even with a traditional mix (i.e. not using
essential oil additives). Did you use a premix? They rarely turn
out well, mostly because of the paste's age by the time you use it.
As for the gummyness, if it was covered, it should be damp until
removed. Sometimes mine gets gummy and never dries right if I put
too much sugar in the mix, so watch that in the future.
