Sample tests:
I tested indigo, henna and turmeric on scraps of the silk.

I mixed 100g of henna with lemon juice and let it sit overnight. The next morning, I mixed more lemon juice into the henna until it was the consistency of soft yogurt, and put it in a carrot bag.

I mixed the indigo with water until it was the consistency of soft yogurt and let it sit 5 minutes, and put it in a carrot bag.

I mixed turmeric with water until it was the consistency of soft yogurt and let it sit 5 minutes, and put it in a carrot bag.

I cut the tips off the carrot bags and made squiggles on the silk with each. I let these samples dry for 4 hours.

The indigo bled (the color spread out) greenish stain onto the silk, with a blue line where the paste remained. The henna did not bleed from the paste lines. The turmeric bled slightly from the paste lines. Beautiful colors formed at the interface between the bleeding of the different stains.

I ironed the samples paste side down, onto an old towel, with the iron set on cotton or HIGH, to heat set the dyes. I ironed directly on the silk. The longer I ironed, the darker and more vibrant the henna color became, changing from olive green to dark brown. I scraped the dyestuff off and rinsed the samples. The dye appeared to be stable and wash fast after heat setting.
