a "stinky" design - too much heat?

has anyone ever been bothered by the odor of a henna design? here's
the henna experience i had recently:

i did two designs on myself using the same batch of paste. i mixed
the paste using lime juice and coffee, and let it sit overnight.

i did the first design on my ankle, which produced a very light
brownish design. hoping for a darker stain, i decided to experiment
next on the palm of my hand, using some other staining tips i found
on various web sites.

after the design on my hand began to dry, i re-hydrated it by dabbing
it all over with a cottonball dipped in more lime juice. i covered
the design with a sheet of plastic wrap and placed a heating pad on
it for about fifteen minutes.

i was really please with the results, a dark cherry colored design
that didn't smear in the least. however, the next day i noticed the
strong odor the stain had. it didn't smell anything like the paste,
which had a pleasing organic scent. it's hard to describe, but this
smell was bitter and pungent, and after passively smelling it for a
few hours, i started to feel ill from it.

has anyone else ever had a similar experience? the only thing i can
think of attributing it to is that i may have over-done it on some
account, maybe i baked my skin along with the henna. nevertheless,
i'd love to hear from the pros on this..
