I've seen boxes like that in import shops and they're fabulous! I've
also seen Moroccan leather lamps and drums that have been hennaed and
the paste left on -- really wonderful.

I have tried henna-ing drums with good success. Use fresh henna and
sift the way you ordinarily would, then mix a simple paste -- no oils
or sugars or any other extras. Henna, tea(or coffee or cloves or
whatever) and lemon/lime juice. I apply it just like I would on a
person, except drums are easier to maneuver and don't complain if the
design turns out different than expected. Keep the drum in a warm
place for a few days. Then, you can either leave the paste on to
flake off with use, or you can flake the paste off yourself and apply
heat (I've used an iron on low) to bring out the color.

Haven't tried henna on wood recently. My last attempt wasn't so
successful, but the wood had been previously oiled so that probably
affected uptake of the henna.
