You post reminded me of something I read in a book by Gary Jennings
about Marco Polo. This is fiction but Jennings usually uses
historical references (and then exagerrates for the benefit of the
story). In one part of the story Polo is in Baghdad and he sees men
with their beards dyed red with henna and is told by a slave that his
is the henna plant, which the women use as a cosmetic and carters use
to adorn their horses (apparently the manes and tails are dyed with
henna). Ever hear of this Catherine?
