Eid Mubarek !

Today's the last day of Ramadan for most countries in Asia. We will
see the (baby) moon tonight and declare tomorrow (Jan 8) as the first
day of Syawal (the 10th month of the Islamic calendar). Eid is a huge
celebration here in SEA (especially in Malaysia, Indonesia &
Singapore). I have done mehndi on 2 ladies (who were very pleased with
the results). I have done both my feet and my hands. We will have a
big feast tonight and afterwards, I'd do more mehndi on any guest who
wants them :-).

Applying henna a few days before Eid has been practised for a long
time (tho' Malays were contented with henna dipped fingers than
fanciful mehndi). My mom used to have a big henna party with her mates
when she was a young girl. The tradition got lost somewhere in time
and most modern women actully don't practise it anymore (what with
more women being in the workforce, they have to deal with explaning
why their fingers miraculously turned red). That and the fact that
alot of women here seem to associate henna with being "old-fashioned".
I can see the trend changing now, more and more young, modern,
sophisticated women are going for mehndi (was it only to imitate the
"Madonna" look ?). There's a bazaar at the Malay Village (equivalent
to a Chinatown, only that the people are Malays ... duh!) and there
are many mehndi services available. You only need to choose the price
and the pattern. Somehow I find this sight rather pleasing :-) ...

Tomorrow we shall put on our best clothes and jewelleries, flash our
sweetest smile, shake everybody's hands and place your hand to your
heart (to signify sincerity), ask for and give forgiveness and
basically have fun ! Lots of food to eat, pictures to take and stories
to share.
