Very dark stains -- rough skin a week later?

I did a stain a week or so ago on the palm of my hand. Used pre-made henna (been feeling lazy lately), finished up with New Skin, TP and plastic wrap overnight. (actually, only about 2/3 of the night -- I woke up at 4 at took it off in a dazed stumble for the washroom) Got a beautiful deep red/brown stain. Very dark.

A week later, I noticed that I could FEEL where the stain was on the skin, especially in the areas where the pattern had filled-in portions (rather than fine lines). It was raised just slightly above the non-hennaed skin. Over the next few days, I ended up peeling off bits of deeply hennaed skin (I've always had to pick at rough skin. (sigh)) and ended up peeling off the darkest layer, leaving a nice orange/brown showing from underneath.

I've never had a henna design before that made the hennaed section rougher than the surrounding skin. What happened? Did I do something wrong? Or is it just that the non-hennaed skin exfoliated faster than the hennaed skin? Was the darkness of the stain to blame? Is there such a thing as TOO DARK? (grin) How can I avoid this in future?

Thanks
