I'm sorry to hear that you had such an experience in Morocco. Those
henna hustlers (in Djemma al Fna, right?) are nortorious for adding
nasty stuff to their henna. They are as bad at the PPD slingers at
beaches and resorts elsewhere....they know their clients are tourists
who want a dark stain fast and don't want to leave the paste on and
that they will be leaving before they can complain of an adverse
reaction. Some of the things they add to their paste to make it
stain darker are gasoline, kerosene, butane, paint thinner and
ammonia. There are probably other things that I don't know aobut,
but any of those can give a pretty nasty reaction. A reputable henna
artist in Morocco (i.e., not the henna hustlers of Djemma Al Fna)
will ask you if you want them to add that stuff; if there are
language difficulties they might not ask, but usually they will mix
the paste in front of you so you can check it all out and make a face
if they are about to put something nasty into it.
