I can answer one of your questions, the one about straining the paste
after you mix it. I do this regularly and I think it is actually
quicker and more effective than sifting the henna powder. Sifting is
to make a coarse henna finer but straining does this as well as
remove any lumps that form while mixing. And straining takes at the
most 30 seconds total; that time includes scraping the henna from
your bowl into the stocking and using a plastic bag to pull the henna
out through the stocking. There are instructions with photos on how
to do this at the link below.
