How do I make my own transfers?

I want to make my own stencils/transfers so that I can make the same
henna patterns after they've already faded on my skin but I don't
know how. I heard that you can draw a design on a piece of paper
using a water-based marker and then putting it on your skin and
wetting it but does that actually work? Can I use Crayola washable
markers or is there a specific kind that I have to use?
