: So, don't worry about "Yuck". He/she has a right to their own
: opinion. And we have a right to ours. I love henna, even though my
: Norwegian-German husband hates it and is supported by about half
the
: Muslim men in our community...that don't stop the women. We still
: wear it and enjoy having henna parties.

My husband is one of those people that doesn't like henna. He
doesn't like the smell and thinks hennaed palms look diseased. He
told me that the first time he had seen henna on my palm after I had
been to a friend's wedding. That was many years ago, and while he
still doesn't like it, he doesn't say anything about it. He doesn't
much care for the smell of my hair after I've hennaed it, either. I
have to admit that I don't care for the scent in my hair, but I do
like it on my skin.

During my first job out of school I worked with a lot of Indian
women, and hennaed palms weren't unusual. Our boss hated it and
thought it looked like everyone had a palmful of worms. I loved it!
I didn't care whether she (or anyone else) liked it or not. When I
was invited to friends' weddings I hennaed my hand along with all the
other women there. This was a new thing for me waaay back then. I'd
hennaed my hair for several years but I didn't know it was used on
the skin. Such beautiful, intricate designs, too! It was wonderful!

: So, have any of you ever gone to a traditional henna party?

Yes, the night before the weddings mentioned above. The first time I
attended one was about 20 years ago, and the last time was about 11
years ago. They were wonderful experiences that I'll never forget!
Most of the time the only English I heard was when someone was
speaking to me directly, but I didn't care that I couldn't understand
most of the conversations. It was much more fun being in a room with
all the women applying henna to themselves and each other than being
by oneself. But, since I may never have the opportunity to attend
another one, I'll enjoy myself using henna on my own whenever I feel
like it. (Besides, I'm still celebrating the fact that I've found
henna sources again after not having any for the past 3 years and
damaging my hair using chemicals as a result.)

Regards,

Marina
